On 20th February 2024, the Teachers’-Principals’ Trade Union Alliance of Sri Lanka staged a massive demonstration in the city of Kandy, the capital of the Central Province. The demonstration aginst the ruling government was attended by thousands of teachers, principals, and education Instructors of the state sector. They demanded solutions for their salary anomalies and for the reduction of the prices of stationery items which had risen considerably due to recent government tax policies. They also voiced their displeasure at collecting large amounts of money from parents to maintain state run schools. The protestors started marching towards the city centre from the railway station when they were stopped by the police. However, they continued to walk towards the city and carried out their demonstration. The protest was organized by the Ceylon Teachers’ Service Union and several other trade unions of the education sector.
