On May 15, 2024, a massive demonstration was held in Colombo with the participation of the Sri Lankan trade union movement and youth associations.
At present, the ruling group that has implemented the current neo-liberal economic policies is selling all the country’s national resources to loot, and following the advice of the IMF, the country is following very wrong economic policies.
The national resources which are important for the country’s national security as well as for the benefit of the future generations of the country are sometimes being given to companies without any transparency.
The Government is working to sell the Sri Lanka Electricity Board, Sri Lanka Airlines, Sri Lanka Oil Corporation, Telecom Institute, Sri Lanka Insurance Company as well as the ports and renewable energy production in the country.
The free education system that provided education to Suwahasak children in Sri Lanka and the free health service which was a great relief to the Suwahasak people in Sri Lanka are being abolished and they are being sold off by turning them into profit-seeking businesses rather than service providers.
The current President of Sri Lanka and the Parliament are a group of people who have been deeply angered by the people but maintain power under the guise of the constitution.
In fact, the current rulers who have developed these neo-liberal economic ideologies do not have any people’s mandate to make such serious decisions about the national resources of this country.
Therefore, the fight against the sale of the country’s national resources will grow even more. The people will fight against the sale. The trade union movement will be a leader for that.
